Simon Pegg says JJ Abrams had a bigger plan for who Rey’s parents were

April 4th, 2018 by Marc Comments

One of the biggest issues – and there are many – people have with Star Wars: The Last Jedi is the revelation that Rey’s parents were no-one of note in the Star Wars universe.

In the movie Kylo Ren tells Rey that her parents – despite all the fans’ having theories [it’s Han’s daughter! Luke put her on Jakku to keep her safe! She’s Obi-Wan’s child! Etc!] – were “filthy junk traders who sold you off for drinking money. They’re dead, in a pauper’s grave in the Jakku desert.”

However, while many are ok wit this, many others are angry that Rey doesn’t fit into the Skywalker story more comfortably.

After the movie was released, director Rian Johnson said of his choice: “I went through all the possibilities in terms of who her parents could be. I made a list.

“[This option] made it feel right to me… I like the idea that we’re breaking out from the notion that the Force is just this genetic thing, that you have to be tied to someone to [have it]”.

However, since then there has been much speculation, especially with the return of JJ Abrams, director of The Force Awakens, to Episode IX, if this was always the plan… after all, it did feel as though there was a bigger plan for Rey’s parentage.

And now it seems there was… enter Simon Pegg, who played Unkar Plutt in The Force Awakens.

Talking about Star Wars (here), the actor stumbled into Rey’s bloodline and revealed that it wasn’t the way it was meant to be at all: “Well I know what JJ kind of intended, or at least what was sort of being chucked around. I think that’s kind of been undone slightly by [The Last Jedi]. I don’t know. I don’t know (laughs).

“There was some talk about, you know, a kind of relevant lineage for her. But I honestly don’t know, and I don’t know if anybody knows. We shall see.”

It really sounds like Pegg didn’t want to get dragged too far into the whole thing but we have to wonder what JJ’s plan was for Rey… a Solo? A Skywalker? A Kenobi?!

Whatever it was, will we see him return to it in the next movie? Will we see him retcon Rey’s parents’ identities? It could certainly be done… Kylo could have been lying to Rey or manipulating her through the Force… maybe Snoke implanted these false ideas in their minds?

Whetever the plans, we sort of like the idea that Rey is just a Force sensitive character, not connected to everything… but then we also like that she may be linked to it all.

What do you all think? Let us know your thoughts…
