So we reported a few days ago that Upgrade director Leigh Whannell has signed on to make The Invisible Man at Universal and now he’s attached to something almost unthinkable…
An Escape From New York remake.
“Whannell will write the script for the remake of the John Carpenter 1980s classic. Sources say that while there is no deal for him to direct, the door is open for that possibility.”
The movie was previously set to be rebooted by Luther writer Neil Cross and to be directed by Robert Rodriguez but the project never saw light of day.
Word is that Whannell has an idea that will pay homage to the original but also take it in a new direction.
The original 1981 movie was set in a future (then 1997) where Manhattan had been turned into an island-sized maximum-security prison. When the president of the United States crashes into the decaying city, an outlaw is coerced into traveling inside to rescue him.
All things said, we’re dubious of a remake of this John Carpenter/Kurt Russell classic… but all we can do is hope for the best.
Thoughts?
