Yes, this is happening. This is real. Seriously!!! Marvel and Sony have agreed to a deal that’ll allow Spider-Man to become a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

To be clear, both studios will be able to use Spider-Man. Let me explain.

Under the deal, Spider-Man will arrive in an upcoming (not yet named) Marvel movie that’ll integrate him into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Then, Sony will release the next film in the Spider-Man franchise, which will be co-produced by Kevin Fiege.

Still with me? Good, cause here comes the part you’ll want to know. After those two things happen, Marvel and Sony will work together to decide the future of Spider-Man. Sony though will continue to “finance, distribute, own and have final creative control of the Spider-Man films”.

Don’t think this is a simple deal just so Marvel can get Spidey into the MCU, the reverse is also a possibility. As Marvel and Sony are discussing bringing MCU characters future Spider-Man films.

Needless to say, a LOT of people are going to be happy about this. Not the least of which is Bob Iger, CEO of Disney, “Spider-Man is one of Marvel’s great characters, beloved around the world. We’re thrilled to work with Sony Pictures to bring the iconic web-slinger into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which opens up fantastic new opportunities for storytelling and franchise building.”

Sony agrees, “We always want to collaborate with the best and most successful filmmakers to grow our franchises and develop our characters. Marvel, Kevin Feige and Amy, who helped orchestrate this deal, are the perfect team to help produce the next chapter of Spider-Man,” said Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment. “This is the right decision for the franchise, for our business, for Marvel, and for the fans.”

So rejoice Marvel and Spidey fans! This is happening! And this is only the beginning, who knows what might happen now that Spider-Man will be in the MCU. I hear he might get an invitation to “assemble” with some other heroes…

UPDATED

The Wrap are reporting that Andrew Garfield is NOT coming back as Spider-man/Peter Parker. We were hoping he would as the issues with the last two movies weren’t his…

Director Marc Webb is unlikely to be involved either reportedly.

We’ll keep you posted, folks.
