Well, it’s time to draw a line under the whole ‘will Spider-man come back to the MCU?’ because it looks like the door has closed.
For now, at least.
Sony Pictures chairman and CEO Tony Vinciquerra addressed Variety’s Entertainment & Technology summit, saying: “For the moment the door is closed.”
He went on to say that there is “no ill will” between Sony and Marvel and “It’s a long life”, so he’s certainly not saying it’ll never come around again.
“We had a great run with [Kevin Feige] on the Spider-Man movies,” he said.
“We tried to see if there’s a way to work it out….the Marvel people are terrific people, we have great respect for them, but on the other hand, we have some pretty terrific people of our own. [Feige] didn’t do all the work.”
He also said that, along with Venom 2, there are “five or six” Spider-man shows in the works.
“Spider-Man was fine before the event movies, did better with the event movies, and now that we have our own universe, he will play off the other characters as well,” Vinciquerra said. “
I think we’re pretty capable of doing what we have to do here.”
So, it looks like Sony’s arms are wide open and Spider-man is coming back to the stable. Spider-man in Venom 2? I’d say it’s very possible…
