Good news for Spider-man in the MCU fans as it seems the deal between Sony and Marvel/Disney allowing Tom Holland’s Spider-man/Peter Parker to appear alongside the other MCU characters has been extended.
You may recall there was a period in August when Spider-man’s future in the MCU looked uncertain with it looking like Sony might take the rights back, leaving Marvel with a universe sans Spidey, but Tom Holland and a massive fan backlash kept ol’ webhead in the MCU… at least for another could of outings.
But now it seems that his stay in the MCU has been extended, with word being it’s due to Spider-man’s importance to the MCU being pretty important in the coming years (Spider-verse, anyone?) with Marvel bossman Kevin Feige saying at the time he was “thrilled” as Spider-man “happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.”
We know that Spider-man 3 will star returning stars Jamie Foxx as Electro and Alfred Molina as Doctor Octopus from previous Spider-man movies starring Andrew Garfield and Toby Maguire who, speaking of, are looking likely to appear too as different versions of the character.
Which has us wondering… will we see current Sony/Marvel characters Venom (Tom Hardy) and Morbius (Jared Leto) appear too? Well, no way of knowing for sure just yet… but right not, Spider-man is set to hang around for a while and it really does look like all bets are off as far as who could appear and who may not.
“I think probably it’s up to Sony,” Feige has previously said on the possibility of these characters appearing, “Sony has both those characters and, has Venom in their world. I don’t know what their plans are for another Venom or if they’re doing that. But it seems likely at some point.”
Morbius is set for release on March 19th, 2021, Venom: Let There Be Carnage is scheduled for June 25th, 2021 and Spider-Man 3 is coming in December 17th, 2021.
