Good news, bad news and confusing news from the world of Sony’s Spider-verse tonight folks.
With LA’s Cinemacon 2022 currently going on, we’re getting cool bits of movie news trickling down and tonight it’s all about the web-slinger. And his friends, em, enemies.
First up, the bad news.
The Into the Spider-verse sequels have been given a proper title but have also been pushed back several months.
The first movie, originally set for October this year, has been delayed until June 2nd, 2023 and will be called Spider-man: Across the Spider-verse and, at the event, the opening 15 minutes were screened and the word is the opening, featuring Spider-man 2099, Spider-Gwen and a pregnant Spider-woman, is stunningly good. The movie is also tipped to feature well over 200 characters.
The third movie, originally set for next year, will now arrive on March 29th, 2024 under the title Spider-man: Beyond the Spider-verse – interesting title… what could lie beyond the Spider-verse, we wonder?
Venom 3 has also been given the go-ahead at Sony… leaving us wondering where they go next since they (stupidly) killed off Carnage in the second movie.
The now-filming Kraven the Hunter starring Aaron Taylor Johnson is looking like Sony’s next Spider-man-related release with a January 13th, 2023 date no scheduled in and the Dakota Johnson starring Madame Web, which we feel will tie into the Spider-verse in big ways, will arrive in July 2023
As for the unexpected news, it was also revealed that an El Muerto, left, movie is coming.
It’s ok, we didn’t know who he was either.
Known as Juan-Carlos Estrada Sanchez in the comics, El Muerto is a wrestler whose powers are handed down by ancestry in the form of a mask which gives him superhuman strength. El Muerto has gotten in the ring with Spider-Man and word from CinemaCon is that the movie will meet Sanchez just before he is given the mask… so an origin story, then.
He will be played by Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, also known as Bad Bunny (I’m getting old!), if that means anything to you.
So that’s where we are… Venom 3, Madam Web, El Muerto and Kraven are all coming soon, while the Spider-verse sequels – possibly our most anticipated comic book movies in the coming years – are much, much further away than previously revealed.
Now word on Morbius 2 though.
Weird.
A shift in the multi-verse.
