Plot details of Star Wars: Episode VIII are tightly under wraps at the moment, but an interesting titbit has just been revealed, and it’s sure to get fans excited.

While we know little about the upcoming film, it’s been confirmed that one female character will return for the 2017 follow up.

The LA Times via Squareeyed ran a profile of the female characters in The Force Awakens, which included the following detail about Gwendoline Christie’s ‘Chrometrooper’ Captain Phasma: “[Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy] has big plans for Phasma and confirmed that the captain will carry on into the next movie. She’s an important character, a baddie in the best sense of the word.”

The news confirms Phasma will return in Episode VIII, alongside Daisy Ridley’s Rey and Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, even though we’ve seen next to nothing of the original trilogy’s star in the trailers we’ve seen so far.

Rian Johnson will direct the as-yet untitled sequel for a 2017 release, taking over from JJ Abrams who is directing The Force Awakens. Colin Trevorrow of Jurassic World will then direct Episode IX.

Meanwhile, Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits UK cinemas on December 17 and US cinemas on December 18. Watch a trailer below:
