Summer Sci-Fi 2013 – the top four movies to watch out for…

May 13th, 2013 by Marc Comments

It’s easy to entertain ourselves at home these days. Gaming consoles are better than ever, electronic apps bring games and entertainment to our pockets, and communicating with friends and family has never been easier. On top of these obvious advancements in home entertainment, there’s always newer tech coming out to change our habits, whether it’s the upcoming Xbox console, or a service like ShareFile that lets us enjoy enhanced Internet communication. Progress is endless. But no matter how many great tech innovations come out, nothing quite beats a good old summer sci-fi flick. So here are four to get excited about in the summer of 2013.

After Earth
M. Night Shyamalan takes us to outer space in this futuristic epic featuring Will Smith and Jaden Smith once again as an on-screen father/son duo. The film takes place 1,000 years in the future, when humans have left Earth for Nova Prime and a ranger force keeps the peace. Will Smith plays Cypher Raige, head of the rangers, while son Jaden plays young recruit Kitai Raige. However, on a mission to Earth, Cypher and Kitai experience a crash landing and find themselves on a vicious and wild future Earth where they must fight for their lives every moment.

Man Of Steel
If you’re not excited about Man Of Steel yet, you’ve probably been locked in a basement for a few months. Superman films have been hit-or-miss in the past, but this latest attempt looks like a surefire hit. Produced by Christopher Nolan and directed by Zack Snyder, the film’s trailers simply seem to be depicting a more serious take on the comic book icon than we’ve seen in recent years. Henry Cavill will don the red cape, leading a dynamite cast featuring, among others, Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner, Amy Adams, and Michael Shannon in the villain’s role.

Pacific Rim
So far, Pacific Rim looks a bit like Transformers in the ocean, but the concept of this Guillermo del Toro film is intriguing. In the not-so-distant future, the human race is threatened by monstrous creatures that rise from the Pacific Ocean, and must turn to enormous robots in an attempt at defense. When the sea creatures prove to be the superior force, the weight of mankind’s battle falls on the shoulders of a single duo of pilots in charge of an old robot no longer in use.

Elysium
It’s the year 2154, and Elysium is the new home for mankind’s wealthiest and most fortunate citizens. A giant, man-made habitat orbiting Earth, Elysium enforces strict laws keeping the rest of mankind – the poor, sick, and hopeless who still live on a ruined Earth – from accessing luxury, healthcare and safety on Elysium. However, the balance may shift when Max Da Costa (Matt Damon), a young man from Earth, becomes desperate to reach Elysium and bridge the gap between societies.

Chad Hudson

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
