The key to making Thor: Ragnarok? ‘Don’t take it too seriously,’ says Director Taika Waititi

September 3rd, 2017 by Marc Comments

We’re only a couple of months out from Thor: Ragnarok and, while we’re excited, the the trailers haven’t been the dark, epic looking takes we expected.

And it seems there may be a reason for that.

Director Taika Waititi has been talking about his approach to making the movie and it seems that his approach to arguably the biggest, darkest tale so far in the MCU was to… have fun?

The movie will focus on Ragnarok, the end of Asgard, home of Thor and with threaten the entire universe but let’s not let all that get too heavy, right Taika?

“If we were taking things a little too seriously I would say, ‘Never forget that we’re making a cosmic adventure with a space Viking.’ That sort of captures it all.”

Adding to why it shouldn’t be too serious, he said: “We’ve got the Incredible Hulk, and a giant woman with antlers. We’ve got aliens and spaceships. It’s almost like a bunch of kids were asked what they wanted to put into a movie, and then we just did that.”

Which is all fair enough, but given the heavy themes of the movie, we really hope the tone won’t be too silly. But maybe that’s just us?

Let us know your thoughts.

Thor: Ragnarok opens in theaters on November 3, 2017.

Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
