To the shock of no-one, Disney is developing a Cruella sequel

June 6th, 2021 by Marc Comments

If there was one thing that truly surprised me last week, in a time when we are finally allowed – I hate that word – to return to the cinema, it was that Disney seem to finally have made a live-action remake/reimagining that was actually worth watching.

Now, look, I’ll be honest, the only reason we ended up seeing Cruella was that it was the only movie the whole family could go to that we hadn’t other seen or that was too adult, so the pickings were slim and, having been burned by Disney before, I wasn’t terribly excited at the prospect… but I do like Emma Stone and it was the cinema!

And, shockingly, I really, really enjoyed it.

And so, it’s far from surprising, to me, anyway, that Disney is already developing the sequel with director Craig Gillespie and screenwriter Tony McNamara both expected to return. So far star Stone has yet to be confirmed but it seems very unlikely thay’d cast anyone else in the role given how much she made this fresh, different version of the iconic Disney villainess totally her own.

The movie is doing well with audiences and critics (hey, I – me! – liked it) and a Disney spokesperson said in a statement: “The film has been incredibly well received by audiences around the world, with a 97% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes in addition to A’s in every demographic from CinemaScore on opening weekend, ranking it among the most popular of our live-action reimaginings. We look forward to a long run as audiences continue to enjoy this fantastic film.”

So yes, expect the sequel sometime in the near future and if that doesn’t scare you, no evil thing will…
