Well, it’s official, the third TRON movie has finally gone in front of the cameras!
The movie will be called TRON: Areas and will star Jared Leto, Evan Peters, Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith and Cameron Monaghan – we also have learned that FTN favourite and X-Files star Gillian Anderson will also star in the movie, directed by Joachim Rønning.
The movie officially went into production on January 19th and is one of the most anticipated sequels of all time, with it being hinted at in 2010’s TRON: Legacy, however, it’s unlikely this story will follow the original idea from then as stars Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde are not expected to return, nor has it been revealed that Cillian Murphy will be appearing, as he was set up to be the villain in Legacy.
TR3N (hopefully that’s not permanent) was supposed to begin filming last August but was delayed at the time due to the strikes in Hollywood, with Rønning sharing on social media at the time: “Today was supposed to be our first day of principal photography on ‘Tron: Ares’ (a movie subsequently about AI and what it means, and takes, to be human). Instead, we are shut down with over a hundred and fifty people laid off. It’s indefinite, which makes it exponentially harder for everyone.”
Thoughts? I know you have them! Voice-off in the usual ways on FTN’s Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube, Bluesky,
Truth, Tumblr, Threads & Mastodon!
I’m a big TRON fan, so I’ve been looking forward to this for a long time but it’s disappointing that it’s unlikely to pick up after Legacy or even the animated series TRON: Uprising which was brilliant but canceled by Disney as it went against what they had originally planned for TRON 3 – it irks me when ongoing franchises have loose ends that may never be resolved.
Let me hear all your thoughts, folks!
