Remember the days when movies got sequels based on how well they did at the box office?
Well, despite only opening today and reviews being luke-warm at best, Oz: The Great and Powerful has already had the sequel greenlit at Disney with Romeo Must Die scribe Mitchell Kapner set to pen it.
According to Darkhorizons: Kapner came up with the concept, ideas and initial drafts for this origin story of ‘The Wizard’ character from the classic L. Frank Baum books. David Lindsay-Abaire came onboard to work on later drafts.
Whether or not the movies will lead up to the events of the classic Judy Garland The Wizard of Oz remains to be seen…
UPDATE:
Sam Raimi has said, regarding the sequel:
“I haven’t planned on directing the sequel. I did leave some loose ends for another director if they want to make the picture… I was attracted to this story but I don’t think the second one would have the thing I would need to get me interested.”
