WATCH: Actress Mindy Kaling says she’s talked to Disney about bringing Kamala Khan into the MCU

June 13th, 2019 by Marc Comments

We’ve know for a while now that Marvel are looking at bringing Kamala Khan, the Muslim girl who becomes Ms Marvel, into the MCU (here) and now it seems that while nothing has been announced yet, talks ARE happening behind the scenes.

Actress Mindy Kaling – best known for playing Kelly on The (American) Office has confirmed that Disney/Marvel have been in touch about bringing Kamala Khan, AKA Ms Marvel, into the MCU: “I think the people I’ve spoken to [at] Marvel about it are so excited about the character, and I think that they’re trying to figure out what to do with it, and I told them I would help in any way, because I truly love her. But they seemed really interested, and I think they will probably do something,” she told MTV in the interview below.

She went on: “Now that there’s, like, this streaming platform with them it might be something like that… but I think they understand how much there is the excitement.”

In the comics Kamala is – I think but I might be wrong – the first Muslim hero in the Marvel universe and on who should play her, Kaling said: “I feel it might need to be an unknown.”

Of course, MCU commander-in-chief Kevin Feige said of the character a few months back:  “Ms Marvel, which is another character in the comic books, the Muslim hero, who is inspired by Captain Marvel is definitely, sort of, in the works. We have plans for that once we’ve introduced Captain Marvel to the world.”

And, well, it’s true to say that Captain Marvel has been introduced to the world.

Of course, with Khan only appearing for the first time in 2013, she’s not the first person dubbed Ms Marvel as Carol Danvers – yes, THAT Carol Danvers – Sharon Ventura and Karla Sofen were all known by that title before her… although, given the current drive for inclusivity and diversity, I can definitely seeing Khan being the first in the MCU to go by that name.

The character in the comics can stretch her body, shrink in size and shape shift, so it’ll be interesting to see if she has all these abilities in the movies if and when it happens.

So there you have it, talks are being had for Ms Marvel in the MCU.

And now I want to hear your thoughts…

Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer.
