WATCH: Deadpool 2 writers confirm those mid-credit scenes are canon as Deadpool celebrates ten years on screen

May 20th, 2018 by Marc Comments

Man, oh man… there’s no words for how much I absolutely adored Deadpool 2.

Full disclosure, I loved Avengers: Infinity War very, very much, but the heart and sheer mad comic love in this movie made me love it a bit more.

So now you know.

Oh, and there’s spoilers in here.

So after the end of Deadpool 2, during the credits, Deadpool gets Cable’s time travel device repaired and goes to fix events from the movie as well as several past events such as him starring in Green Lantern and the first appalling appearance of Deadpool in Wolverine ten years ago (more on that below) and, frankly, some of the things he does changes the whole outcome of the movie, so if you left before the credits you saw a different movie than those who stayed.

But the mid-credit scenes are so off-the-wall that some, including my good wife, wondered if maybe they were played more for giggles than for actual impact on the movie.

However, in a recent Reddit Q&A writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick admitted that yes, the events were canon:

In a recent Q&A on Reddit, the writers for Deadpool 2 confirmed that the scenes featured during the credits of the film are in fact canon: “Yes, the after credit scene is CANON. Don’t expect that device to stick around beyond this movie, though!”

What they mean by this is that Deadpool will unlikely get a third movie according to star Ryan Reynolds, but he will appear in the upcoming X-Force movie, which means it’s unlikely we’ll see the events addressed directly again.

And, honestly, that’s fine with us.

Oh, and speaking –  as we did earlier – of Reynolds’ first appearance as Deadpool in Wolverine a decade ago, Deadpool has released a video marking the occasion… and yes, he’s having a playful jab at Marvel’s recent celebrations. But, hey, it’s Deadpool… we’re ok with it.

Directed by David Leitch, Deadpool 2 stars Ryan Reynolds as the Merc with a Mouth, Zazie Beetz as Domino, Josh Brolin as Cable, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Stefan Kapcic as Colossus, Morena Baccarin as Vanessa Carlisle, T.J. Miller as Weasel, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al and Karan Soni as Dopinder.

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
