Ok, look, I admit it, I missed this when it first came out six months ago but on finally seeing it, I feel I need to share it in case any of you guys haven’t seen it.
In a roundtable discussion for THR, actors such as Adam Sandler and Dwayne Johnson discussed various roles in their careers, and among them was Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill.
While talking about the Star Wars sequel trilogy, Hamill revealed a conversation he had with director JJ Abrams while working on The Force Awakens.

Hamill reveals that he, like fans still are to this day, was shocked that there was no attempt to have him as Luke Skywalker reunite with Carrie Fisher’s Leia Organa and Harrison Ford’s Han Solo, the original three stars of the franchise since 1977.
”I said, ‘Aren’t we going to have a moment where all three of us get together to raise the roof? It’ll only take 30 seconds,'” Hamill recalls, before sharing Abrams’ response: ”And JJ said, ‘Well Mark, it’s not Luke’s story anymore.'”
Sigh.
Sigh.
Ok, look, yes, The Force Awakens was a new chapter in the Star Wars universe but, as Disney are only now learning, much to their downfall, Luke’s story is and always will be, at the heart of Star Wars.

It’s well known that Ford only wanted to return once in the prequels, so Abrams – and presumably Kathleen Kennedy and Disney – denying the fans the opportunity to have these heroes who they idolised and last saw together in 1983, just shows how out of touch they really were with the franchise.
Hamill says here “it’ll only take 30 seconds,” and yes, that’s absolutely all it would have taken for the fans to have that emotional moment, that connection to what they love about Star Wars one last time and look, I loved The Force Awakens at the time (though it’s been staled a bit now that I know what comes after in the next two movies) and at the time, I wasn’t annoyed that our heroes didn’t meet but if I had known that Abrams and Hamill were having converstions like this, that such arrogance and disregard for the fans and what they would want was creeping in like the Dark Side, I might have felt a it differently.
Heck, it’s all these years later and I feel differently about it now.
Abrams started Star Wars on a road that has all but destroyed it for legions of fans and it remains to be seen if it can ever come back, but if the whole new era started with ‘It’s not Luke’s story anymore,’ then I think we can see why.
