WATCH: Jason Reitman drops details about the new Ghostbusters movie

June 13th, 2019 by Marc Comments

I know Ghostbusters Fanfest was last week, but this footage has gone online taken at the even of Jason Reitman, director of the upcoming Ghostbusters 2020 talking on the directors’ panel at the event about the third Ghostbusters movie (in the prime continuity).

And while he doesn’t reveal too much – the full talk is below – he does drop some cool new details about the story, including a tease about who exactly the new family are.

“We wanted to make a love letter to the original movie. And this is a story that I , again, I did not expect to be making a new Ghostbusters movie,” he said.

“I thought I was going to be this Indie dude who made Sundance movies. And then this character came to me. She was a 12 year old girl. I didn’t know who she was or why she popped into my head, but I saw her with a proton pack in her hand. And I wrote this story. This story began to form over many years actually. It started with a girl and all of a sudden it was a family. And eventually I knew this movie that I needed to make, that I needed to write.”

Going he, he said: “It’s a new movie. It’s really about a new set of characters. It takes place in a new place, a new location. And what I said to you, Paul, and meant, is that what I’m excited for is the possibility of all kinds of Ghostbusters movies. I’m hoping that you guys will join me on this one because these characters are amazing, I can’t wait to introduce you to them. … They are a family. … This is what I’ll say.”

And perhaps most teasingly of all, he adds: “You don’t know their connection [to the original characters]. And they don’t know their connection yet, either.”

So, from this we can draw that the movie will likely not be set in New York which will be strange as NY was a character in the first two movies as much as anyone. Secondly, the new characters reference sounds like, as expected, this will be a passing of the torch-type of movie and, finally, I’m going to put my neck on the block and say the family will be related to Egon, the sadly gone Harold Raimis, in some way.

Anyway, it’s fun to listen to and even more fun to speculate.

Whatever happens, it cannot come quick enough!

Let me know your thoughts, gang.
