We’re finally only a few weeks away from the return of Miles Morales in one of my most anticipated movies of the year, Spider-man: Across the Spider-verse, and we have some new details, posters and a trailer… and it seems that perhaps we shouldn’t be hoping for a happy ending. At least not yet.
“Across The Spider-Verse is a movie on its own, but it definitely ends on a bit of a cliffhanger,” co-director Kemp Powers says of the new movie.
“I think it’s a good cliffhanger. We hope that it’s a satisfying tee-up for what’s coming in the third film, because you want people to be excited about what’s coming next.
“And it helps that we knew going in that this was part two of a three-part story. Since you already know that that third story is guaranteed, you can tackle it a bit differently. That being said, there’s a lot of key characters in this film, and there’s a story in this film that has an arc of its own that we needed to complete.”

This all sounds awesome but co-director Joaquim Dos Santos adds: “hopefully, this is our Empire.”
This is a reference to The Empire Strikes Back, the movie the crew most compared this new Spider-verse story to… and we all know that Empire doesn’t end too well for our heroes and perhaps we should expect the same for Miles, Gwen and the team here?
While know the third movie is coming next year, I’m not sure I can handle our guys left in a dark place at the end of this movie… even if I do know it’s always darkest before the dawn, as another hero taught us.
Of course, I know that for a story to have true gravitas, we need to know there are real steaks and perhaps this movie will be the epitome of that.
But I guess we’ll all find out for sure come June 2nd.
