WATCH: New Fast X featurette drops as we learn details about Brie Larson’s character and is the late Paul Walker’s Brian set for a return to the series?

A brand new Fast X (Fast and Furious 10) featurette has dropped that focuses on the ever-increasing Toretto family featured in this franchise.

One of the series’ biggest focuses was on family and the ones we’re not just born into but that we make along the way – the result is that the series is one of the biggest around and shows everyone else how exactly you should make a franchise that’s diverse and all-inclusive.

On the topic of family, we have some cool news about one of the movies’ original family members and one of the newest additions.

Everyone knows that Paul Walker, who played Brian O’Conner in the series, died tragically in 2013 while he was filming the seventh movie in the series and through the use of CGI, footage already filmed and his brothers stepping in for him, the actor and character were given an emotional farewell at the end of that movie.

However, the character has been referenced several times in the next to movies, hinting at his life off-screen – as well as Dominic Torettos’ son in the series now called Brian – but it seems that we may actually see him return in the new movie using similar techniques that allowed them to finish the seventh movie, after all, deepfake technology has come on a lot since even then.

In a new interview, star Vin Diesel spoke of the tragic event and how the series isn’t done with Brian just yet: “That moment in 2013 when the world was struggling with his loss, the studio made a very bold and righteous and daring decision to keep Brian O’Conner alive; I will give you this without spoiling anything: I couldn’t imagine this saga ending without truly saying goodbye to Brian O’Conner.”

Michelle Rodriquez teased a big surprise near the movie’s end recently and it has us wondering if this might be a fully-realised Brian back on screen: “I think people are gonna be really, really surprised and we’re gonna get a lot of open mouths at the end of Fast X,” she says.

Gal Gadot’s Gisele set for return in Fast X?

“Let’s just put it that way. It’s gonna be like, ‘Really? What?’ Like that! Like that’s how I was in the theater. I was like, ‘Oh my god. What have we done?'”

Of course, this could also be hinting at a death in the series, a big star appearing to set up the final movie or something bigger but we have a feeling that’s what she’s referring to.

As well as who may return, the new movie adds several new characters including Jason Momoa’s villain who is related to a previous villain in the series, but another big addition to the cast is Scott Pilgrim Vs the World star Brie Larson’s Tess, a character who we see fighting with Rodriquz’s Letty in the trailer:

Up until now, we’ve had no idea who Tess was, but Larson has revealed that she’s related to one of our favourite characters in the series: Kurt Russell’s Mr Nobody.

“Tess is Mr. Nobody’s daughter,” she says.

“She is technically Agency, but she’s kind of a bridge, in a way. She doesn’t go along with the way that the Agency’s headed now that her father isn’t there. She believes in the legacy that her father set up, which is standing with Dom and standing with the Toretto family, and is fighting for that. Dom knows that she has a strong mind and definitely respects that she’s gone out of her way to talk to him and wants to build trust. What he asks of Tess is a test. Like, if it’s an impossible task, and she can get it done, then that’s family for life.”

After being introduced to the series in Fast & Furious 7, Mr Noboy became a pivotal character, being the one mostly responsible for Toretto’s team basically becoming action heroes but in F9 we learned that he was in a plane crash but his fate was never revealed, we’re guessing that is why Larson, right. is here: to fill his shoes… and hopefully reveal what happened him [if they killed him off-screen, we’ll not be happy].

Dwayne Johnston not returning for Fast & Furious movies… but will continue in Hobbs & Shaw movies

“Tess is a little bit of a mystery,” Larson goes on.

“She is part of the Agency, but she also goes rogue and edges more towards the family side, but that means she has a lot to prove. When Dom gives her an impossible task that’s going to require a lot of thought and effort and also is putting herself at risk, she doesn’t question it. I think that shows who she is, that she’s willing to go to those lengths. She agrees to do it because she wants to show up for this family the way that her father did. She’s also really intelligent. Tess plays the game well. She’s not afraid of going on her own mission to do what she feels is right in her heart.”

The Fast and Furious series sits up there with Scream and John Wick as one of my favorite insane franchises and I can’t help but be excited about this tenth movie and to see where it goes next with spinoffs, sequels, prequels and all that good stuff.

The end of the road begins.

Fast X, the tenth film in the Fast & Furious Saga, launches the final chapters of one of cinema’s most storied and popular global franchises, now in its third decade and still going strong with the same core cast and characters as when it began.

Over many missions and against impossible odds, Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his family have outsmarted, out-nerved and outdriven every foe in their path. Now, they confront the most lethal opponent they’ve ever faced: A terrifying threat emerging from the shadows of the past who’s fueled by blood revenge, and who is determined to shatter this family and destroy everything—and everyone—that Dom loves, forever.

In 2011’s Fast Five, Dom and his crew took out nefarious Brazilian drug kingpin Hernan Reyes and decapitated his empire on a bridge in Rio De Janeiro. What they didn’t know was that Reyes’ son, Dante (Aquaman’s Jason Momoa), witnessed it all and has spent the last 12 years masterminding a plan to make Dom pay the ultimate price.

Dante’s plot will scatter Dom’s family from Los Angeles to the catacombs of Rome, from Brazil to London and from Portugal to Antarctica. New allies will be forged and old enemies will resurface. But everything changes when Dom discovers that his own 8-year-old son (Leo Abelo Perry, Black-ish) is the ultimate target of Dante’s vengeance.

Directed by Louis Leterrier (Clash of the Titans, The Incredible Hulk) and written by Justin Lin (F9) & Dan Mazeau (Wrath of the Titans), Fast X stars returning cast members Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jordana Brewster, Sung Kang, Jason Statham, John Cena and Scott Eastwood, with Oscar® winner Helen Mirren and Oscar® winner Charlize Theron.

The film also features an extraordinary new cast including Oscar® winner Brie Larson as Tess, a rogue representative from the Agency; Alan Richtson (Reacher) as Aimes, the new head of the Agency who doesn’t hold the same fondness for Dom’s crew as his predecessor, Mr. Nobody; Daniela Melchior (The Suicide Squad) as a Brazilian street racer with a powerful tie to Dom’s past; and legendary Oscar® winner Rita Moreno as Dom and Mia’s Abuelita Toretto.

Fast X races into cinemas on May 19th.
