WATCH: Trailer drops for Emma Stone’s take on Cruella

February 19th, 2021 by Marc Comments

We have the first trailer for Cruella, starring Emma Stone and it looks pretty solid.

Stone takes on the iconic Cruella DeVil from the 101 Dalmations stories and, thankfully, the story is not a remake like the recent tiresome Disney output but goes down the Maleficent road of a fresh(ish) take on an established characters so points at least for a little bit of originality.

Cruella first appeared in Dodie Smith’s 1956 book The Hundred and One Dalmatians and the classic animated take was voiced by Betty Lou Gerson in Disney’s 1961 animated adaptation and played by Glenn Close in the 1996 land 2002 live-action movies.

So… which version of Cruella is this? Anyway…

Cruella (Emma Stone), which is set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute, played by two-time Oscar winner Emma Thompson (Howards End, Sense & Sensibility). But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella.

Joining Stone and Thompson are British actor Joel Fry (Game of Thrones, Yesterday) as Jasper and Paul Walter Hauser (I, Tonya) as Horace (the bumbling henchmen from the original 101 Dalmatians) along with Kirby Howell-Baptiste (Killing Eve) and Emily Beecham (Into the Badlands). The long-in-development film will be directed by I, Tonya filmmaker Craig Gillespie (The Finest Hours, Million Dollar Arm).

Cruella is currently slated to hit theaters on May 28th.
