The first M3GAN spinoff, SOULM8TE is set for release digitally on August 1st and the trailer is here.
The movie has been unceremoniously dumped on digital after M3GAN 2 performed so poorly at the box office.
At the time, Blumhouse boss Jason Blum said of the sequel’s performance: “We all thought M3GAN was like Superman. We could do anything to her. We could change genres. We could put her in the summer. We could make her look different. We could turn her from a bad guy into a good guy. And we classically over-thought how powerful people’s engagement was, really, with her.”
Blum admitted that he thought the M3GAN franchise was summer blockbuster material, but sadly they learned otherwise: “We thought she could live in the summer, right? We thought, ‘We’re going from a little movie to a tentpole!’”
Because of this massive misstep, the new spinoff has suffered and it’s likely the M3GAN universe is now dead in the water.
Unnerving, suspenseful, and darkly compelling, SOULM8TE follows a grieving engineer tasked with testing a ruthless tech giant’s new AI companion. But when he attempts to program her to be a truly sentient soulmate, she develops needs of her own – unleashing a relentless spree of precision-engineered mayhem.
SOULM8TE hits digital on August 1st.
