WATCH: Vincent D’Onofrio says Kingpin can’t appear in any Marvel movie

While it’s great to have Daredevil officially in the MCU in Born Again, it’s hard not to really appreciate just how awesome Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk AKA Kingpin.

D’Onofrio gives one of those ‘he was born for this role’ performances and, as a Marvel fan, while watching him here, it’s hard not to imagine him, like his character in the comics, interacting with other Marvel characters on the small screen but especially on the big screen.

Fisk and Spider-man, for example, have a long history in the comics and seeing this Kingpin throwing Tom Holland’s Spider-man around might be more fun than I care to admit, in fact, back in 2020, the actor himself expressed his interest in being in the then untitled Spider-man 3 (here).

Only thing is, it seems unlikely to ever happen.

On the Happy, Sad, Confused Podcast, D’Onofrio discusses his return to Kingpin and if we might see how outside of the Disney+ anytime soon.

Sadly, the answer seems to be ‘no’.

“It’s a very hard thing for Marvel to do, to use my character,” D’Onofio says.

Carrying on, he says: “I’m only usable for television shows … Not even a one-off Wilson Fisk movie … It’s all caught up in rights and stuff. I don’t know when that would work out — or if it ever would work out at all”

Tom Hardy’s Venom set for Spider-man 3? And Vincent D’Onofrio wants his Kingpin in there too…

Undoubtedly, this has something to do with his character originally appearing in the Netflix Marvel shows before Marvel got the right back, bringing him and Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock/Daredevil into the MCU. How it’s complicated exactly, I couldn’t say, but we know these things are always messy and have a tendency to cause issues in places that were unexpected. However, we saw Cox play Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home, so all hope may not be lost.

Fact is, D’Onofrio’s take on Kingpin is perfect and honestly, he should eventually be out there messing with heroes other than Daredevil, complicating things for, for example, the Fantastic Four or Thor… the possibilities are endless.

Let’s hope the rights and legalities aren’t airtight because we want this man in the wider MCU, dammit!
