WATCH: While I wasn’t paying attention, Star Wars made Captain Rex in Return of the Jedi official

November 28th, 2020 by Marc Comments

Fans of this site, and Star Wars in general, will know that there has been a theory for a while that Captian Rex, hero of the Clone Wars and then part of the Rebellion that overthrew the Empire, was actually IN Return of the Jedi.

Now, this is something we have covered before (here) with many people believing that a character seen briefly in Return of the Jedi in among the rebels on Endor, was actually Rex… even though Rex didn’t come into existence until Clone Wars dropped in 2008, almost 28 years after Return of the Jedi.

The character (above) does bear quite the resemblance to Rex as seen in Rebels –  the character in Return of the Jedi was called Nick Sant due to his similarity to Santa/St Nick – and when Dave Filoni actually referenced this in 2017 (see the link above), it was pretty much confirmed for fans that this was Rex.

Add to this that, in the Rebels 2018 finale Hera Syndulla confirmed that Rex did indeed fight in Endor, it was cemented.

But now we have more than hearsay… we have actually got a representation of him with Han Solo in official Star Wars lore:

The image above is from the Star Wars short-form animated show, A Galaxy of Adventures, and in the episode, Ewoks vs. The Empire – Small but Mighty, which you can watch below, Nick Sant has quite clearly become… Captain Rex.

The character now wears Rex’s clone armbands and there’s no denying this is now meant to be Rex.

Indeed, Dee Bradley Baker, who voices Rex in all the animated shows, said of him: “I’ve not said goodbye to Captain Rex yet. Captain Rex made it all the way to Endor, so… he’s still with me.”

More confirmation?

Now, for the sake of balance, I must add that Lucasfilm Story Group’s Matt Martin said of the episode and Rex’s appearance: “I think it’s just the usual GoA stuff, not meant to be taken literally.”

Personally, I doubt we’re done with Rex yet. We know there’s a Bad Batch animated series coming (here) and we believe there’s a Rebels sequel series coming too  and both these shows are perfect for having Rex appear, so I reckon his full story is still yet to be chronicled.

Don’t forget too that now that we have Ahsoka Tano in The Mandalorian and Temuera Morrrison is back as Boba Fett, it wouldn’t surprise me if Rex popped up too, given that Morrison played the clones in Attack of the Clones too.

What say you all? Do you like Captain Rex as much as we do? Do you think that’s him on Endor? Let me know your thoughts, guys…
