Only a few days ago we had a story on TRON: Legacy director Joe Kosinski talking about the cancelled TRON: Ascension (that’s TRON 3 to you and me) and now Disney are reportedly back onboard for a new TRON movie.
What is happening?
Well, word on the grid is that the studio is developing a new TRON and want Jared Leto – who was reportedly in talks many moons ago to star in TRON: Legacy – to star as a character called Ares.
But here’s the confusing part – no-one knows if this is a reboot or a sequel.
Ares was reportedly a character in the script for TRON 3 and apparently the new movie will focus on him but not necessarily as a sequel to Legacy.
We reckon if this is going to happen it has to be third movie as the fan outcries would be deafening if they started afresh… and Disney aren’t stupid; TRON: Legacy really put the franchise back on the nerd sphere and we can’t see this being ignored. Even if the movie tells a separate in-universe story.
“No writer has been hired at this exploratory stage, and no filmmaker is involved. Justin Springer, who co-produced Tron: Legacy and exec produced the Tom Cruise sci-fi movie Oblivion, will produce. Leto and and his producing partner Emma Ludbrook would also be involved in some producing capacity if the project moves forward,” report THR who say they have a source close to the studio.
We would love if Kosinski returned to direct and managed to take the cast of TRON: legacy back onboard, but at this stage it’s far too early to say.
What say you all? How would you like to see the TRON franchise continue? Or would you at all? Let us know…
