Whedon dashes our hopes that he will direct new Star Wars trilogy

January 14th, 2013 by Marc Comments

Well nerds, we all hoped, we all prayed, some of us maybe even made sacrifices on alters that Joss Whedon would throw his hat into the ring and helm the new Star Wars trilogy, but alas, those sacrifices may be in vain. The busiest nerd in Hollywood had this to say about any involvement with a new Star Wars film:

“I’m as angry as you should be,” Whedon said about being unable to take on a “Star Wars”-sized project. “When I heard that I was like, ‘I wonder… no, I really can’t do that. Oh, I already have a job.’ I wouldn’t clear the Avengers. I’m having so much fun with that sequel right now, just with the script, that I couldn’t imagine not doing it.”

The guy is already up to his ears with work as he preps the next installment of the Avengers as well as the upcoming S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show. Originally thought to be only directing the S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot, he recently signed on to become the director of the series. I for one would be more than okay with him dropping the show in favor of doing the Star Wars trilogy. I might even go so far as to say I’d be okay with him not being as involved with the Avengers if it meant him doing Star Wars. I know, I know nerds, that might be a step too far for some of you, but Star Wars will always be my first love over comics.

When asked about who he thinks would be a good choice for the new Star Wars films he said: “Oh I’ve got a lot of things. Where’s my list I’m carrying on me?” Whedon joked. “But you know, I’d like to see a little edge. We all missed the Han [Solo] of it. It got very portentous, which was justified by the story, but I think we’d all like to see a little anarchy in the mix.”
Oh well, is J.J. available?

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
