Will Star Wars: The Last Jedi bring balance to the Force through the Grey Jedi?

April 18th, 2017 by Marc Comments

In the new teaser for Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi Luke is heard to say that “It’s time for the Jedi to end,” and this has fans considering if perhaps the ‘balance’ that the Force needs isn’t what we thought it was…

The whole concept of bringing balance to the Force has been present throughout the Saga. In the prequels it was thought Anakin would be the one to do it: “You refer to the prophecy of the one who will bring balance to the Force. You think it’s boy?” as Mace Windu asked Qui-Gon in Episode I.

Then it was believed that Luke would bring balance back to the galaxy where the Jedi had been extinct for several years.

But what if the balance isn’t having the Jedi and the Sith, the good and the evil, but rather having one group who are both and neither?

It’s a theory that’s been around for a while, the theory of The Grey Jedi. No absolutes, no life without love or possessions, but rather a life where you accept your shortcomings, your good and your bad and strive to be the best you can…  a life, a way of life, that wouldn’t allow for the creation of another Darth Vader or Kylo Ren.

Remember Mace Windu cut down Jango Fett in cold blood? Remember when Obi-Wan cut the legs off the monster in the arena before stabbing it in the head? Or, on the flip side, remember Luke wouldn’t kill Vader despite both Yoda and Obi-Wan telling him he would have to? The Jedi aren’t perfect… and it’s perhaps the struggle for unachievable perfection that leads to the creation of monsters.

Could this be what Luke knows needs to happen when he says the Jedi must end?

We’ll all know in December when we meet The Last Jedi.
