With the rumours now suggesting that Scream VII will feature not only the return of original final girls Sidney Prescott and Gale Weathers, played by Neve Campbell and Courtenay Cox, but will see Ghostface coming back specifically to get them, it’s time to accept that the ‘Core Four’ from Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett AKA Radio Silence’s Scream V & VI, have had their story finished. At least for now.
And while the plan, it seems, was to have the star of the last two movies Melissa Barerra’s Sam Carpenter return to have a final throwdown with Ghostface, her firing from the movie put an end to that which is, of course, sad, but the young actress, who is currently kicking vampire ass in Abigail in cinemas, is satisfied with the ending Sam got on screen.
New Scream VII cast and plot details lead to exciting places
“I feel like the ending of Scream VI was a very good ending, and so I don’t feel like ‘Ugh, I got left in the middle’,” says Barerra while out promoting Abigail, “No, I think people, the fans, were wanting a third movie to continue that arc, and apparently, the plan was a trilogy, even though I was only contracted for two movies. So, I did my two movies, and I’m fine. I’m good with that.
“I got two – that’s more than most people get. When you’re on a TV show, and it gets canceled, you can’t harp on things, you gotta move on. That’s the nature of this industry too, I get excited for the next job, I get excited for the next skin I get to put on. It’s exciting to create a different character.
“So yeah, I feel good. I did what I set out to do. It was always meant to be two movies for me, ’cause that was my contract, and so everything is perfect.”
Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and Kevin Williamson return for Scream VII
For the record, I do agree with Barerra here, in saying that Sam and her sister Tara, played by Jenna Ortega, got a good send-off in Scream VI, with the final shot of Sam dropping the killer’s mask, being a nice way of saying her story was done, I mean, it could have ended on a cliffhanger or setting up a whole new chapter for the characters but instead, it closed it all off very nicely.
That said, as excited as I am to have Campbell and Cox back as the leads for Scream VII, I did like the new characters and was excited to see where their story would have went too but, look, Campbell is back after exiting Scream VI, so you can never say never when it comes to characters returning to horror franchises.
And while we’re on the topic, it seems that Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, whose Abigail is getting rave reviews, are happy too that, even though they were forced of directing duties for the next movie, Campbell and Cox are returning to the series:
