With the news that Ready or Not: Here I Come has stopped filming just a few days ago, screenwriter Guy Busick has talked about where the sequel picks up following the events of the first movie and it sounds like it’s going to play out as one movie… and if there’s plans beyond this new installment.
Busick is back working with directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett aka Radio Silence, for the highly anticipated sequel with Samara Weaving returning as Grace, the bride whose whole world gets turned upside on the night of her wedding when her groom and his whole family try to kill her in a deadly game of hide and seek.
Weaving and Newton announce Ready or Not sequel finished filming
“Things that we reference,” he starts, “over and over again are Aliens and Terminator 2,” he said. “How do you blow it up in a way that isn’t even the same genre, but hits all the notes and has the same DNA? [Ready of Not] Here I Come is a horror movie with humor, just like the first one. But what’s the crazy, bigger world of it?”
He says that originally, the movie was a standalone, something they were all proud of but when the studio asked for a sequel, they really had to find a way in that made sense and Weaving returning as Grace was a must-do: “Samara is such a brilliant actor. We were like, ‘We want to do it again with her. We just have to make it make sense.’ When we hit the idea, we were like, ‘Yes, we get more Sam. We get more Grace.’”
Weaving’s Grace is still wearing the blood-spattered dress in the sequel that she wears at the end of the first movie:
- Ready or Not
- Ready or Not 2
Obviously, he doesn’t spoil the story of the sequel, but he does explain exactly where in the timeline it takes place: “[The] movie picks up the second after the first movie ends. Grace wakes up in the hospital. No time has passed for her. The last thing she remembers is her in-laws exploding, including her new husband. They exploded in front of her and covered her in blood. She went outside and had her cigarette. The EMTs and fire department came. The credits roll and it picks up right there.
“Worldbuilding was important to us in that even in the first one, we were asking ourselves, ‘The Le Domas aren’t the only family that has done that.’”
Radio Silence discuss “f—ing banger” Ready or Not sequel plans
Interestingly, he seems to be hinting at a much bigger world, full of families making deals with that universe’s devil, Le Bail, and where it could lead down the line… are there more movies and stories to tell? “We were like, ‘Okay, there is a bigger story. So, who are the other families and are they connected? Could there be a network of families that have made these Faustian bargains with the mysterious Le Bail character? And what would that look like?’ he continued. “Those questions just became a lot of fun to chase.”
It’s this connection that also led to the confirmation recently by Radio Silence that their other movie, Abigail, which featured a ballerina vampire, is set in the same world as Ready or Not. This is a world I really hope gets explored in the future beyond even Ready or Not: Here I Come because it’s already shaping up to be a wild, exciting and scary one.
Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all!
