Zachary Levi replies to Shazam! suit haters and we’re totally behind him

April 7th, 2018 by Irwin Fletcher Comments

Even though we still haven’t seen an actual official picture of Zachary Levi in his SHAZAM! Costume there have been several photos leaked from the set showing Levi as SHAZAM! and as to be expected some parts of the internet have already jumped on the doom and gloom wagon and have very vocally criticized the costume.

In response, Levi has given his own opinion on a recent Instagram live video: “‘Why the crap suit?’ WOW! Okay, well I don’t think it’s a crap suit. I think my suit is f—in’ bomb, to be perfectly honest,” Levi said in the live video.

“I know that there hasn’t been an officially released photo yet, but there have been incredibly high quality photos that have been released. And I think any of you people out there who are still hung up on what the suit looks like are just wanting to be angry for angry’s sake. I think you’re very insecure, you probably are dealing with some stuff in your own life, and you feel a little powerless, and I’m sorry that you do. Wherever you’re at and whatever you’re going through, I’m sorry that you’re going through that.

“But, I do think you should probably take a second and reflect on why you’re as negative as you are about maybe anything in life, and then re-look at the suit and go, ‘Actually hey, you know what? They’re trying really hard to make something that’s awesome and that pleases a lot of different people,’ because Captain Marvel’s been around for a really long time and has had a whole bunch of different iterations of suits. So, you can’t win ’em all, but you can at least hope that people will give you a fair shake.

I have to agree with Levi here and as I have said before we are lucky that the comic books we love and have loved for years are finally getting the recognition in other media, in the time before the first X-Men (BX) movie all we really had was Blade (good) Clooney’s Bat Nipples (Bad) a mediocre Flash Tv Show (Meh), the Captain America TV Movie ( absolute sh#@e) and some great cartoons but never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine something like the MCU, the Arrowverse or even the DCEU.

Some day the bottom is gonna fall out of all this and we should all enjoy it while we can so I say to the haters, the complainers, the naysayer and the moaners: “Please STFU and enjoy what we have while we have it,  because it ain’t gonna last forever and when it’s gone yo’u gonna miss it.”

Production is underway on New Line Cinema’s “Shazam!”  David F. Sandberg (“Annabelle: Creation”) directs the origin story, which stars Zachary Levi (TV’s “Chuck”) as the titular DC Super Hero, along with Asher Angel (TV’s “Andi Mack”) as Billy Batson, and Mark Strong (the “Kingsman” movies) in the role of Super-Villain Dr. Thaddeus Sivana.  Peter Safran (upcoming “Aquaman,” “The Conjuring” and “Annabelle” films) serves as the film’s producer.

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out.  In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard.  Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them!  Can he fly?  Does he have X-ray vision?  Can he shoot lightning out of his hands?  Can he skip his social studies test?  Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child.  But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).

“Shazam!” also stars Jack Dylan Grazer (“IT”) as Billy’s best friend and ultimate superhero enthusiast, Freddy, part of the foster family that includes Mary, played by Grace Fulton (“Annabelle: Creation”); Darla, played by Faithe Herman (TV’s “This is Us”); Eugene, played by Ian Chen (TV’s “Fresh Off the Boat”); and Pedro, played by Jovan Armand (TV’s “Hawaii Five-O”).  Cooper Andrews (TV’s “The Walking Dead”) and Marta Milans (TV’s “Killer Women”) play foster parents Victor and Rosa Vasquez, with Ron Cephas Jones (“This is Us”) as the Wizard.

Christopher Godsick, Jeffrey Chernov, Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia are serving as executive producers.

Sandberg’s creative team includes his “Annabelle: Creation” director of photography Maxime Alexandre, production designer Jennifer Spence, editor Michel Aller and costume designer Leah Butler.

Set primarily in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, principal photography for the film is taking place in Toronto.

Firmly set in the DC universe but with his own distinctly fun, family-centric tone, the character first appeared in Whiz Comics in 1940 and was created by Bill Parker and C.C. Beck.

A New Line Cinema production, “Shazam!” is set for release on April 5, 2019.  It will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
