Zack Snyder reveals Rebel Moon Director’s Cuts and video game are coming

August 29th, 2023 by Marc Comments

With the trailer for Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon Parts 1 & 2 arriving last week – and, I cannot tell a lie, looking fantastic – the Snyder fans have been fired up to see what’s next as December 22nd, when the first movie hits Netflix, can’t get here fast enough.

But it looks like the director has plans for the first two movies beyond their initial release on the streaming service, with them set to get the Director’s Cut treatment that, well, all hos movies have had in the past.

“I can’t help myself,” Snyder says while revealing that there are extended, more adult-oriented, versions coming after the movies’ releases: “The hope is for it to come out down the road,” he said.

Discussing his previous Director’s Cuts, he explains that they were always part of the plan at Netflix: “In the initial conversation I was having with Netflix about just this concept of them saying like, ‘Oh, well, why don’t we make it part of the plan?’ That makes it a lot easier. “

“When you make a movie, you have a lot of voices in your own creative mind telling you what would be narratively just the strongest solution. And then, you have this other tug on you. I do anyway, that is like, ‘Well, what if there’s rabbit holes that are really amazing to go down and just kind of learn about different aspects of the characters?’ For me, those have always been a thing that in the drawing when I draw the scenes or when I am writing the script, I always end up with a lot of that stuff that I feel like really tells the sort of deeper dive story.”

Describing his (two) Director’s Cuts as “a six-hour sitting,” adding: “I always said that what I’d do on the side will be just, I’m not going to consider rating, so it’ll just be what it is, and it’s a much different experience.

“I feel like the cool thing about the PG-13 version is you can watch it with the family, you considered it. Where the other version is much more like, you know…”

While these second editions of the movies are still something he’s hopeful about rather than sure off, he says that he’s filmed “close to an hour of extra content”.

“With Netflix, we shot scenes just for the director’s cut. So in that way, it’s really a revelation because it gives that second kick at the can for big fans,” love the man or hate him, there’s no denying he loves giving the fans that bit extra.

But! That’s not all.

Snyder has also revealed that the folks behind Rebel Moon are partnering up with Super Evil Megacorp, with Snyder saying they have “been incredibly reverent and faithful to the source material, and they’ve been incredibly inclusive and really want to talk with me constantly about mythology and about the canon and about the world.”

The game will be a four-player co-op and will only be available to Netflix customers (full details here) and it will take place after the first two Rebel Moons movies and will expand the universe.

With the Army of the Dead franchise being something of a damp squib, it really sounds like Rebel Moon could be a big hit for Snyder and his fans.

A new universe awaits on Netflix, starting December 22.

From Zack Snyder, the filmmaker behind 300, Man of Steel, and Army of the Dead, comes REBEL MOON, an epic science-fantasy event decades in the making.

When a peaceful colony on the edge of a galaxy finds itself threatened by the armies of a tyrannical ruling force, Kora (Sofia Boutella), a mysterious stranger living among the villagers, becomes their best hope for survival.

Tasked with finding trained fighters who will unite with her in making an impossible stand against the Mother World, Kora assembles a small band of warriors — outsiders, insurgents, peasants and orphans of war from different worlds who share a common need for redemption and revenge.

As the shadow of an entire Realm bears down on the unlikeliest of moons, a battle over the fate of a galaxy is waged, and in the process, a new army of heroes is formed.
