Spiel des Jahres Winners announced

August 22nd, 2014 by Irwin Fletcher Comments

Legendgerry was off working on Ireland’s biggest music festival for the last few weeks and is now trying to catch up on all the news he missed, starting with biggest gaming awards ceremony in the American tabletop calendar.

The winners of the the prestigious Spiel des Jahres awards have been announced.

The over all Spiel des Jahres winner Camel Up is, in my opinion, not a patch on the brilliant Concept (review here) and I don’t see how the judges arrived at this decision. Seriously flawed decision in my opinion, the mechanics are poor, the outcome is random and the appeal limited. Its only redeeming feature is it is short to play. Concept is definitely more fun for the family.

The Kinderspiel des Jahres is for games aimed at children (which is the category Camel Up should have been in) and was won by Geister, Geister, Schatzsuchmeister! This game is a nice haunted house adventure romp where the players try to find gem stones before the ghosts in the house get ’em! I haven’t had a chance to test this one personally as it was only released for the German market but from all reports it is a worthy winner.

The Kennerspiel des Jahres is for games aimed at adults, in the case of this years winner Istanbul it’s all about planning, resource management and assigning tasks. I have yet to get to test it but it is highly rated by those who have and I will probably purchase it soon, unless of course someone wants to send me a review copy…….
