You know when you get news that is both terrifying and wonderful? Yeah. That.
So, with Ghostbusters 2020 set for release next July, I’d be a liar if I said I wasn’t wondering what sort of toys and merchandise was coming too.
I mean, honestly, it’s crazy how much Ghostbusters stuff I have lying around my house.
And while i loved the Matty figures and kinda liked the Diamond Select ones, for me, the definitive Ghostbusters toys are still the Kenner Real Ghostbusters toys from the 1980s.
I mean, wouldn’t it be awesome if Ghostbusters could go home again?
Not that it can, really. Kenner was was acquired by Hasbro in 1991…
But, Hasbro is still a proper to company, making figures and collectibles for play rather than to sit on shelves (though they do that beautifully too) and now ghostbusters is coming home. Or as far home as they can.
Yes, that was a long of saying that Hasbro has acquired the rights to produce the toys from he upcoming movie and (hopefully) beyond.
“As we build up to release our new Ghostbusters film next year, it was a natural choice to work with Hasbro to develop an all-new line of toys that not only celebrates the new film but also brings us back to the roots of the original film and toy line,” reads a statement from Jamie Stevens, executive vice president with Sony Pictures Consumer Products.
Oooooh… “back to the roots”? Imagine if they went back to the Real Ghostbusters line from 30 years ago! Or at the very least gave us a line based on the new new movie and the 1984 and 1989 original movies. Honestly, that line alone has me giddy.
The statement goes on: “Hasbro has a proven track record of working with well-known IP to make a variety of high-quality toys and figures that appeal to people of all ages, and we are excited to leverage this expertise to bring new product experiences to Ghostbusters fans around the world.”
Hasbro senior vp Tom Warner added: “Ghostbusters is an iconic and beloved franchise and we are excited and honored to return to the brand as the global master toy licensee and bring new product to the next generation of fans. Drawing on Hasbro’s proprietary insights and culture of innovation, we are working closely with Sony Pictures Consumer Products to create a dynamic new toy line that we can’t wait to share with fans around the world.”
Oh boy, this is going to destroy may wallet (terror) but also bring me much joy (giddy).
Thoughts?
Ghostbusters 2020 is coming to do some bustin’ on July 10th, 2020.
