New York Toy Fair 2014 Round Up

February 16th, 2014 by Marc 1 Comment

The American International Toy Fair hit New York City this weekend, during which various companies debuted all of their toy lines hitting shelves in the coming year, and we have some images of what’s in store…

Transformers: Age of Extinction

As we saw in the superbowl trailer, the latest Transformers movie is set to feature the Dinobots – and all of the pre-historic shape-shifters featured in the film will be rendered in toy form.  Among the new additions to the ‘Transformers’ lines are the One-Step Changers, which kids (and adults) can transform back and forth between car and bot in one simple move.

The larger Chomp and Stomp Grimlock shares a similar simplified transforming feature, though this one can also emit T-Rex roars, chomping action and has room for a smaller Optimus Prime figure to sit in.

Captain America : The Winter Soldier

A recent rumour was doing the rounds (and also put forward by members of the FTN team) suggesting the true identity of Robert Redford’s mysterious Agent Alexander Pierce character in ‘Captain America 2′ is [SPOILERS], Red Skull [END SPOILERS]. And to add fuel to the fire, Hasbro revealed that the villain is a part of the ‘Winter Soldier’ toy line. The brand specified that other character renderings were adapted from images in the comic books, but Red Skull is specifically part of the film’s adjoining line. While this doesn’t confirm the rumor, it’s something to think about.

Apart from that we get the usual 3 3/4 inch scale figures which have some decent levels of detail along with some roleplaying masks andshields which are just for the kids.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Electro (played by Jamie Foxx in the film) and Spider-Man (played by Andrew Garfield) were at the forefront of the new merchandise, though, oddly, Green Goblin and Rhino were omitted. That monstrous ‘Ultimate Spider-Man’ Goblin rendering, which we’ve previously seen, made its debut in other batches unaffiliated with the movie-themed lines, as well as Carnage, Shadow Cat and Spider-Girl, but unfortunately this portion of the preview didn’t bear much spoilery or foreshadowing fruit.

Star Wars : Rebels

We’ve already met the new lead characters populating Lucasfilm and Disney XD’s upcoming animated TV series, ‘Star Wars Rebels’ — the young Luke Skywalker-type Ezra,  Jedi Kanan,  droid Chopper, and chief bad guy the Inquisitor. But through the new upcoming toy lines from Hasbro, coming later this year, we met the villainous Agent Kallus (above) and another member of the “Ghost” ship, Keb (below left), who Hasbro says is based on the original and eventually scrapped concept art for Chewbacca.

Star Wars : The Black Series

The Star Wars Black Series has been doing very well since its launch last year and Hasbro says there’s no end in sight for it. In the next wave, packages are getting bigger to allow for larger characters – and now vehicles too. The next waves include Jabba the Hut, Darth Vader (with and without helmet), a Speederbike with Scout Trooper, Jedi Luke Skywalker, Clone Trooper, and Chewbacca.

LEGO Ghostbusters

The LEGO Ghostbusters (21108) set has been officially revealed at the 2014 American International Toy Fair. The set consists of 508 pieces and will be available in June 2014 for $49.99/CAD $59.99. The minifigures included will be Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, Egon Spengler and Winston Zeddemore. The set was announced as the next LEGO CUUSOO project to become an official set last month.

This fun and iconic vehicle from the blockbusting ‘80s movie is fully loaded with all the paranormal detection equipment needed to track down those ghastly ghosts. It also features cool Ghostbusters logo decoration, removable roof, tracking computer and seats for 3 minifigures.

Guardians of The Galaxy

The preview image above gives us a full look at the main team members featured in the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, emulating the previously released teaser image of the live cast. These highly detailed and well articulated Marvel Legends figures look to give fans a much clearer image of what we can expect of this space-fairing band of misfits in their upcoming live action feature! The lineup includes (from left to right) Gamora, Star Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Drax and Groot. These figures show off close up detailed images of the characters in their full costumes, although notably each team member appears to wear their own differential uniforms rather than the standard blue team uniforms worn in the comics.

Batman : The Animated Series figures

DC Collectibles announced they will be releasing an all new highly detailed an articulated toyline based on the classic fan-favorite ‘Batman The Animated Series’. While images have only been revealed for Catwoman and Batman himself, fans can also expect to see Mr. Freeze and Two-Face in the first wave of figures!

DC The New 52 figures

DC Collectibles continues their ongoing series of figures based on the modern designs of classic DC Characters based on their appearances in the ‘New 52′ DC Universe! The next few releases we can expect include Supergirl, Batgirl and Nightwing!

Funko’s ReAction figure lines

Joining the initial release of Alien ReAction retro-styled figures will be characters from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Terminator, Escape from New York, Nightmare Before Christmas, Universal Monsters, Firefly, Back to the Future, The Rocketeer, Predator, Goonies, Pulp Fiction, Scream, Halloween, Hellraiser, Nightmare on Elm Street,  Trick R’ Treat and The Crow.

UPDATE: The guys at Infinite Earths have been working hard snapping the best images from Toyfair and sharing other’s. Here’s some of the best we’ve seen…

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
