24 is returning to television. We can be thankful for that, at least, because while the iconic real-time format drama is being revived, the main man will be absent. Yes, Jack Bauer will not be coming back for more high-octane thrills (we first reported this many months ago).

24: Legacy will feature an all-new cast of characters and follow military hero Eric Carter who returns to the US, only to find that trouble has followed him back.

“The script is a page-turner, it’s very reminiscent of the original,” said Fox co-CEO Dana Walden.

After wrapping its original run in 2010, 24 stormed back onto our screens in 2014 for event series Live Another Day, which saw Sutherland reprise his role of tortured CTU agent Jack Bauer – alongside Mary Lynn Rajskub as faithful ally Chloe.

Sutherland remains attached to Legacy – though only as an executive producer, working alongside fellow series veterans Howard Gordon, Manny Coto and Evan Katz.

The role of Carter will reportedly be played a black actor, with casting now underway. A pilot episode for 24: Legacy will shoot this winter, with Stephen Hopkins, director of the original 24 premiere, on board.
