Amazon has started filming its Dark Tower series and Michael Rooker has joined the cast

June 13th, 2019 by Marc Comments

We’ve known for a while now that Amazon are developing a Dark Tower TV series based on Stephen King’s iconic book series and now we have some pretty great news.

We learned early on that the series would begin with the fourth book, Wizard and Glass, which is chronologically the first story, and will star Eastenders star Sam Strike will play the young Roland, while BlackkKlansman and Vikings star Jasper Paakkonen will be his timeless enemy, The Man In Black AKA Walter O’Dim AKA Randall Flagg AKA The Walkin’ Dude.

We learned later that Game of Thrones star Jerome Flynn has been cast in an unspecified role – if he’s not Eldred Jonas, the leader of The Big Coffin Hunters (one of the main villains in the tale) I’ll eat my hat (I’m definitely going to regret that).

And tonight we learn two bit of news:  firstly, the series has started filming in Croatia (yes!) and secondly, Michael Rooker has joined the cast in – you guessed it – a mysterious role.

Now, once again, I’m only guessing – I’ve read those books far too many times! – but I’d have to say he’s a shoe-in for Cort, the old Gunslinger who trains young Roland and his Ka-Tet (friends) in the books.

I always had an image in my mind of Cort and Rooker pretty much fills it perfectly… so here’s hoping.

Anyway, the series (season 1, at least) will be 13 episodes and will be set many years before the core story of Roland The Gunslinger and will – thank Old Moon – have nothing to do with the Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey movie.

It’s being developed by Glen Mazzara (The Walking Dead), Akiva Goldsman (Titans) and Stephen King and should arrive in 2020.

I cannot tell you how excited I am for this and after watching Good Omens, I have full faith in this.

Let me know your thoughts, guys.

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
