Amazon’s The Dark Tower series has cast its Roland and Man In Black

March 22nd, 2019 by Marc Comments

Oh, boy… now we’re excited.

One of my all-time favourite book series is Stephen King’s The Dark Tower saga. And yes, i was one of the fans disappointed with the movie… it was a let down on every conceivable level.

Idris Elba, a wonderful actor, was criminally miscast, the story was poorly put together and the fact that it condensed eight epic books into a movie that barely made it to an hour an a half means it was never going to succeed.

However, the good people at Amazon have got the ball rolling on upcoming TV series by casting the two biggest names in the story… Roland Deschain and The Man in black.

Eastenders star Sam Strike will play the young Roland, while BlackkKlansman and Vikings star Jasper Paakkonen will be his timeless enemy, The Man In Black AKA Walkter O’Dim AKA Randall Flagg AKA The Walkin’ Dude… I could go on.

Now, you may notice that Strike is a younger actor than we’d imagine Roland playing, and that’s because, as specualted by us a few weeks ago, the series will start with Wizard and Glass, the story of how a young Roland leaves his home of Gilead, crosses paths with the Man In black for the first time, forms his first ka-tet and starts the road that leads to him trying to save all of reality.

The series will be overseen by The Walking Dead’s Glen Mazzara, who said in 2017: “I’ve been a Stephen King fan for decades, and the opportunity to adapt The Dark Tower as a TV series is a great honor.

“The events of The Gunslinger, Wizard and Glass, The Wind Through the Keyhole and other tales need a long format to capture the complexity of Roland’s coming of age — how he became the Gunslinger, how Walter became the Man in Black, and how their rivalry cost Roland everything and everyone he ever loved. I could not be more excited to tell this story.”

The Dark Tower, if there’s any chance of it being done justice on screen, belongs in a (very) long form TV series rather than a constrictive movie series.

If they want to keep the young cast for a while, they could also cover The Wind Through the Keyhole but eventually they’ll have to move into the world of the adult Roland and that’s going to make Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones look tiny in comparison.

All paths follow the beam…
