Be still our beating hearts.

It’s official, the awseome bag of awesomeness that is Ash vs The Evil Dead is in production! A TV spin-off from the legendary 80s schlock horror-comedy B-movies (is there a better phrase in the English language?), the show has movie creators Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert on board, along with star The MIGHTY Bruce Campbell returning as Ash, perennial slacker, avoider of responsibility and slayer of deadites.

Raimi,Tapert and Campbell have recently been interviewed for Shock ’til you Drop and let slip a few clues about what to expect from the series. Firstly, there’s a distinct lack of references to Army of Darkness, the third film in the series. While Raimi has dropped cryptic hints about this and not wanting to spoil ‘the surprise’, Tapert has stated that the events of AoD are in [Ash’s] memory: “It’s a slightly altered universe. It takes place somewhere in an alternate universe after Evil Dead 2. That might seem like a confusing answer, but I don’t want to spoil too much for the audience, but that’s the truest answer I can give you.”

While the series will be funny, it’ll also be scary. Raimi has said of the production company, “Starz has really taken the reins off of us and allowed us to go to town and try and thrill the audience, chill em and scare the heck out of them”. The effects and make-up will be suitably gory, as will the new deadites planned to appear through the series.

Deadites that have been waiting. Although Raimi has said that there won’t be any time travel just yet, he did confirm that Ash has effectively been stalked for the last 30 years for demons that are waiting for their chance for revenge. When they start to reappear, investigator Ruby (Lucy Lawless, yes Xena herself) will begin looking into things and apparently blame Ash for everything.

The series is expected to premiere on Starz this autumn. And apparently the chainsaw WILL return! Once again, groovy!
