With the Order of St Dumas and The Court of Owls more or less part of the Gotham mythology by now, we figured it was only a matter of time before we saw Azrael make an appearance.
And it looks like we may well see him in the second half of Season 2.
Azrael is an assassin, a programmed killer who carries out the dirty deeds of St Dumas. His last incarnation, Jean Paul Valley, was even Batman for a time after Bane broke Bruce Wayne’s back.
We doubt it’ll be Jean Paul we see in Gotham.
Executive producer John Stephens has been talking about seeing the character and how the Order of St Dumas, after they failed to win Gotham over in the series, his still around: “They’re very stubborn,” he says.
“In many respects, Azrael will have many of the hallmarks and traits that we know from the comics. But it will have a brand-new twist upon that character; the way we’re going to bring that character into being on our show will be different than anything we’ve seen in the comics… it will be identifiable as Azrael in all respects, just a version of him we’ve not seen before, which is the point of doing these! How can we do the character with a fresh twist?”
But what of the flaming sword? Azrael has a very awesome flaming sword (two when it’s Valley) but will we see it? “That, I have to say, wait and see.” laughed Stephens.
We love that Gotham is delving into the dark past and mythology of not just the city but the characters and the world of the comics.
