On the back of Gotham being renewed for one final season, the last thing we expected was another Batman without Batman series. Yet, here we are.
Epix, MGM-owned premium cable network, has green-lit a ten-part, straight to series called Pennyworth, which will chronicle the rise of Batman’s butler, Alfred Pennyworth and will come from Gotham showrunner Bruno Heller.
The series will revolve around Alfred Pennyworth, the best friend and butler to Bruce Wayne (aka Batman). The series is not a Gotham spinoff but rather an entirely new story exploring Alfred’s origins as a former British SAS soldier who forms a secret company and goes to work with Thomas Wayne — Bruce’s billionaire father — in 1960s London. Sean Pertwee, who plays Alfred Pennyworth on Fox’s recently renewed Gotham, is not involved. Casting has not yet begun and the series is set in a completely different universe despite hailing from Heller and producers Warner Horizon.
The show will not be related to Gotham, the DC movies, any of The CW’s DC shows or even any of the upcoming DC Universe shows, and will, instead, be a completely separate shows… even though it’s from the people who created Gotham.
What many people don’t know about Alfred is that he has a military background and has beaten many of DC’s biggest characters, including Superman, so while this show may have a ‘scraping the bottom of the barrel’ feel, it could also, to use the proper term, rock.
Like Gotham, the first episode will be produced and directed by Danny Cannon.
Epix president Michael Wright said: “As genuine fans of these classic DC characters, as well as the incredibly talented Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon, we couldn’t be more excited to make Epix the home of this series.
“We can’t wait to work with Bruno and Danny — along with Peter Roth, Susan Rovner, Brett Paul and the team at Warner Horizon — on this fantastic origin story.”
Wait, did the guys behind the Teen Titans GO! To The Movies trailer know about this beforehand? Hmmmmmm…
