Exciting news if, like me, you’re a big fan of the Shitty Carl Universe or, as it’s also known, the movies of Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, as it seems the cult sci-fi duo are heading into the world of TV, expanding their crazy – but wonderful – reality.
Benson and Moorehead brought us trippy outings Resolution, The Endless, spring, Synchronic and, most recently, Something in the Dirt and, while they all are great little sci-fi outings, watched as a whole, you’ll soon realise there’s a shared narrative and reality in them and I for one, discovered them during lockdown and their universe helped me get by; there’s nothing better than discovering something as exciting and expansive as a shared universe while the world is going crazy just outside your front door.
Speaking on the Script Apart podcast, they revealed that they are developing a series set in that shared universe with themselves playing, em, Aaron and Justin [look, no-one’s perfect!]: “Even now, nights and weekends are spent working on what is our next thing for that [independent output],” says Benson.

“Which is essentially, what is hopefully a TV show – at smallest another indie film – in the Endless universe. That’s where we put all of our passion.”
“The main characters are Aaron and Justin again,” says Moorhead, “But that’s about as far as we can probably go right now. What I can say, I am stunned by how good it is. It is Justin’s best work by far, and it’s just so, so incredibly fun to work on. I wish I could get into the plot more – I don’t know if we’re ready or not. But it very easily could be the thing that, if we die right after it’s finished, it’s like, ‘Ok! Cool, I did it. That was the one to go out on.’ It’s very cool.”
The series will follow Aaron and Justin after they escaped the cult caught in a time-loop (yes, really) at the end of The Endless and will chronicle what happens to the brothers (in the story, not real life, obviously) next.
The duo will next be showing us what they can do in Loki Season 2, in which they directed some episodes, but while they’re doing solid work at Marvel (they also directed some of Moonknight), it’s their own world that has my undivided attention.
Damn it, now I have to watch the five movies again… my wife hasn’t seen the first four; that’s a good excuse, right?
Thoughts? I know you have them! Voice-off in the usual ways on FTN’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
