Big Finish announce new Doctor Who adventures starring Jo Martin’s Renegade Doctor and Sacha Dhawan’s Master

April 25th, 2022 by Marc Comments

Let’s be honest, there were few ‘good’ things to come out of the Chris Chibnall run on Doctor Who. I mean, yes, we’ve said numerous times that Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor had the potential to be great but when the scripts she was constantly working with were awful, there’s only so much she could shine… but we have said numerous times that she deserved better.

And sure, John Bishop’s Dan is a lot of fun but he’s unlikely to leave much of an impact when Whittaker’s run ends in her final episode later this year.

No, the two big standouts for us here at FTN HQ were Jo Martin’s Renegade Doctor and Sacha Dhawan’s Master and, yes, Martin’s Doctor was great, no matter how divisive the storyline that introduced her was, so, that in mind, we’re happy to hear that Big Finish have nabber both actors to continue their run as their characters in their excellent audio adventures.

Yes, Big Finish have announced that The Fugitive Doctor Adventures and Call Me Master are up for pre-order with no confirmed release dates yet.

“Big Finish do amazing work – they are a vital part of the fandom,” said Martin. “I’m over the moon to be joining this iconic show. I can’t wait to see what stories they have in store for the Fugitive Doctor.”

Martin’s Doctor was introduced as a previously forgotten/unknown earlier incarnation of the Doctor and having her own series with Big Finish, short of the BBC giving her a series, will be a great way to explore and flesh out this take on the character, whereas Dhawan’s Master is just the latest take on the Doctor’s nemesis, so his character is more than well established by now, although he did give the character a fresh new approach.

“I absolutely adore working with the fantastic team at Big Finish,” Dhawan said. “So, when they asked me to play the Master in his own series, it was an offer I couldn’t refuse! The Master is such a joy to play on so many levels! I can’t wait to see what he’s going to be getting up to without the Doctor around to hold him back! Hold onto your seats, folks…!”

This is definitely fun news for fans of this latest era of Doctor Who and of these characters especially… let’s just hope that Whittaker signs up too because Big Finish would work wonders with her version of the Gallifreyian time-traveller.

Thoughts? Let me hear them…
