Man, it’s been a rollercoaster for Blade Runner fans these last few weeks…
When we got the first look at the highly anticipated Blade Runner 2099 series, it seemed like maybe we were entering a whole new era of Replicants and Blade Runners. But nope, seems like that’s not the case.
We learned in the trailer and at SDCC that the new series would see a world where mankind has fallen to the Replicants and, in some ways, that feels like either it’s the end of the story in this world or a whole new era. And we’ve learned that, if it’s a whole new era, it’s not going to be told in Blade Runner 2099 season 2.
Speaking at SDCC, showrunner Silka Luisa revealed that the series is a ‘one-and-done’ deal, with no season 2 in the plans: “It was always considered as a limited series. Part of making the transition from film to TV is a really big jump for something that’s as cinematic as Blade Runner, and so, in that sense, it was really important to us that we told a story that, in a way, is like a movie in the sense that there’s a beginning, there’s a middle, and there’s an end.
“So we went into it with Alcon, with all of our producing partners, knowing we really want to tell a complete story. Eight episodes—I mean, eight’s my lucky number, that’s the number I would have picked, but it felt like the right amount for the story we were planning on telling.”
I know the internet will make its own reasons as to why this is and they may be right (or wrong) but it’s sad that, after so long in gestation, the return to the Blade Runner universe is going to be a short one (eight episodes) but who knows, if it’s successful, there’s no end to stories that can be told in that dystopian world.
