Bryan Lee O’Malley confirms the Scott Pilgrim animated series at Netflix will not be returning

If you were looking forward to more Scott Pilgrim in animated form on Netflix, I am afraid I have some bad news…

While the first season, which debuted a year ago, was touted as a one-and-done, it seems that creator/artist/producer/writer Bryan Lee O’Malley held out hope that maybe someday more could happen but, alas, it’s not going to happen.

Taking to Twitter/X, O’Malley wrote: “…We were recently informed that the show will NOT return. As you know, we only intended one season, and called in a lot of favors to make it happen, so making more would have been nearly impossible. Still, I know some of you have been holding out hope.”

Edgar Wright unites the entire Scott Pilgrim Vs the World cast for new anime series based on original books

When the series was first announced, producer and director of the live-action movie, Edgar Wright was able ot bring together the whole cast for the animated show and said at the time: “This is not a drill! This is happening! After much musing over the years about there being potential for an anime adaptation of ‘Scott Pilgrim’, I’m thrilled to say one is IMMINENT, with the whole cast back together and… you are going to lose your minds.

“One of the proudest, most enjoyable achievements of my career was assembling the dynamite cast of Scott Pilgrim. Since the film’s release in 2010 we’ve done Q&As and charity read-throughs, but there was never the occasion to reunite the gang on an actual project. Until now…”

While O’Malley said he (they) put everything they had into the series, exhausting all ideas, he has also hinted in the past that he would love to do a sequel comic/graphic novel series, an idea he came up with during the madness of the Covid era:  “I would like to revisit the characters [in comic form] and see what they’re up to. I sketched Scott early in the pandemic with a huge beard. I think that would be a funny image.”

Although, it is with noting that bearded Scott appeared in the animated show, make of that what you will…

Whatever happens, Scott Pilgrim, Ramona Flowers and all the others are enduring characters and have spoken now to more than one generation, so I doubt that, be in onscreen, in a game or on the page, we have seen the last of Scott or his wacky world.

Get ready to battle love, life, and epic beats in the new Scott Pilgrim anime! The OG cast is back on November 17 and ready to rock with Edgar Wright, Bryan Lee O’Malley, BenDavid Grabinski, and the genius minds at Science SARU behind the animation magic
