Constantine’s animated series on CW Seed is going to be a dark affair

January 16th, 2018 by Marc Comments

We’re all looking forward to John Constantine returning to The CW next month when he pops up on Legends of Tomorrow and we’re all looking forward to seeing his character explored a little more in CW Seed’s animated series.

However, it seems the John Constantine that will be appearing in animated form will be the darkest version we’ve seen of him so far – even darker that the character’s more adult orientated origins on NBC.

Speaking at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour, The CW’s executive vice president Peter Girardi said: “It’s Constantine, if you’re familiar with the character. It’s Constantine from the Vertigo comic; it’s dark. Darker than the show.”

This is interesting as Vertigo’s comics is along way darker than anything we’ve seen so far from Matt Ryan’s version of the character… and that’s pretty exciting. We know that he is part of the Arrowverse now and that that’s pretty solidly fun world, but that’s not to say that the Hellblazer isn’t having scary and dark adventures off screen.

This isn’t the first time a character has been explored in animated form as well as in the live-action CW world with both Vixen and Freedom Fighters: The Ray both having explored that ground first… however, we’d be liars if we said that Constantine isn’t the one we’re most excited for.

However, it’s still not totally established how connected the animated show is to the Arrowverse as of yet: “That’s yet to be determined,” Girardi says, “The first one we did was Vixen. And Vixen started out as animated. And I think we were all so happy when it did migrate into the Arrowverse, but it started out as animated first.

“Since then, we’ve figured out a little more of a strategy around it where we worked very closely with Greg [Berlanti] and Marc Guggenheim and the team there to figure out what characters are going to work, what’s in [their] future plans, what we can do.”

With Black Lightning debuting this week, The CW’s Arrowverse (and all the worlds in there) are continuing to grow and expand… Constantine is in there and our excitement to see how it all fits together is always near fever pitch.

Constantine will debut on CW Seed later in 2018 – more as we get it.
