Disney+ is developing a Wakanda series with Ryan Coogler

February 4th, 2021 by Marc Comments

Some unexpected news dropped late last night as it was reported that Disney+ is developing yet another series set within the MCU and this one is likely to be a big one.

Director of the Black Panther movie, Ryan Coogler, has seen his production company Proximity Media sign a multi-year deal with The Walt Disney Company that will see him/them develop not just MCU properties but other Disney series too and the first series they are set to work on is on see in Black Panther’s home of Wakanda.

Bob Iger, executive chairman of Disney said of the deal: “Ryan Coogler is a singular storyteller whose vision and range have made him one of the standout filmmakers of his generation.

“With ‘Black Panther,’ Ryan brought a groundbreaking story and iconic characters to life in a real, meaningful and memorable way, creating a watershed cultural moment. We’re thrilled to strengthen our relationship and look forward to telling more great stories with Ryan and his team.”

The Wakanda series, should it get a full series – and I’d bet on it happening and that would be as safe a bet as any with Paysafe Card Casinos –  then it will join other series such as the currently airing WandaVision and the upcoming Falcon and Winter Soldier, Loki, Hawkeye, Moon Knight, She-Hulk and Ms Marvel not to mention Armour Wars and Secret Invasion which are also at the early stages of development too.

“It’s an honor to be partnering with The Walt Disney Company,” Coogler said.

“Working with them on Black Panther was a dream come true… We are especially excited that we will be taking our first leap with Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso and their partners at Marvel Studios where we will be working closely with them on select MCU shows for Disney+. We’re already in the mix on some projects that we can’t wait to share.”

The show will obviously be set in a world post-Black Panther and we all know that Coogler is currently working on a final draft of that movie with filming set to begin this July (here) but, while we have currently no idea what the story will be, I think there’s a good chance it will reflect real-world events.

We know that late last year we tragically lost Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman and we have heard Marvel boss Kevin Feige say several times that the actor will not be replaced with a CGI double in the sequel, so I would imagine there’s a good chance the show might deal with the training of the next hero to claim that mantle… with many thinking that actress Letitia Wright’s Shuri character being the most likely replacement in the sad absence of Boseman.

Anyway, if there’s one culture in the MCU that we would like to learn more about it’s Wakanda, so it will be fun to see that developed whatever form the show takes.

Are you excited? Let me know all your thoughts, gang.
