Ooooh… finally our first look (kinda) at the new Blade Runner 2099 TV series.
With San Diego Comic Con set to run next weekend (23-26 July), we’re already starting to get little teases and hints at things to come and the latest is images of a San Diego trolley wrap featuring graphics for the highly anticipated Blade Runner live-action series.
First announced in 2022, there’s been very little revealed about the series and certainly nothing leaked or shown except that it will star Michelle Yeoh and was almost filmed just down the road, in Belfast. But I really think these trolley graphics are telling us that we will be getting news from SDCC and hopefully a trailer, given that the series is reportedly set for release next year.
The images, below, are thanks to Richard Schultz over at Cool San Diego Sights:
In Los Angeles 2099, Cora (Hunter Schafer) lived her entire life on the run, a chameleon forced to adopt numerous identities. To secure a stable future for her brother, she assumes one final identity and is forced to partner with Olwen (Michelle Yeoh), a Blade Runner who’s confronting the end of her life. The two are pulled into a widening conspiracy that poses an existential threat to a city that’s fighting to be reborn.
The series marks the fourth on-screen dive into the Blade Runner universe after 1982’s Blade Runner, 2017’s Blade Runner 2049 and the 2021 animated series Black Lotus; there have also been numerous books, games, and comics set in the universe.
The series is based on the original movie’s director Tony Scott’s original idea for a third movie, and when it was announced as going into production in 2021, Alcon Entertainment co-founders Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, also producing, said: “We are beyond excited to continue to extend the ‘Blade Runner’ canon into a new realm with the provocative storyline that Silka has created. Audiences first discovered Ridley Scott’s brilliant vision for ‘Blade Runner’ 40 years ago, and since then, it has become one of the most influential science-fiction films of all time.
Hulu’s Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is officially dead in the water
“Denis Villeneuve’s follow-up sequel, ‘Blade Runner 2049’, then became one of the best-reviewed sequels of all time. So, we recognize that we have a very high bar to meet with this next installment. Together with Silka and our partners at Amazon, and Scott Free Productions, we hope that we can live up to that standard and delight audiences with the next generation of ‘Blade Runner’.”
The series was written by Shining Girls’ Silka Luisa, who is also the showrunner.
Blade Runner 2099 will star Michelle Yeoh, left, Hunter Schafer, Tom Burke, Maurizio Lombardi, Dimitri Abold, Katelyn Rose Downey, Daniel Rigby, Amy Lennox, Sheila Atim, and Matthew Nedham.
It’s well past time that we got at least a look at this series and I have a strong feeling it’s going to be at SDCC.
Thoughts on a first look at Blade Runner 2099 being at SDCC? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all.
