Finally, after two years, we have news about the Blade Runner live-action TV series, Blade Runner 2099.

Behaviour Interactive and PHI Studio have announced a new live interactive experience across North America – full press release below – and, in doing so, have confirmed that the new series is set for a 2027 release.

Hey, kids, remember when TV shows used to come out with twenty-plus episodes every year? Yeah, Disney/Lucasfilm, I am looking at you too.

The press release says: Alcon Television Group, a subdivision of Alcon Entertainment, is currently in post-production on Blade Runner 2099, an original series for Amazon Prime to premiere in 2027.

The immersive experience, which will “plunge visitors into a dystopian world that is both visually striking and narratively rich, staying true to the aesthetic and philosophical essence of the cult classic”, is set for 2027, too, meaning next year will be a big one for Blade Runner and fans of the franchise.

The series marks the fourth on-screen dive into the Blade Runner universe after 1982’s Blade Runner, 2017’s Blade Runner 2049 and the 2021 animated series Black Lotus; there have also been numerous books, games, and comics set in the universe.

The series is based on the original movie’s director Tony Scott’s original idea for a third movie, and when it was announced as going into production in 2021, Alcon Entertainment co-founders Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, also producing, said: “We are beyond excited to continue to extend the ‘Blade Runner’ canon into a new realm with the provocative storyline that Silka has created. Audiences first discovered Ridley Scott’s brilliant vision for ‘Blade Runner’ 40 years ago, and since then, it has become one of the most influential science-fiction films of all time.

“Denis Villeneuve’s follow-up sequel, ‘Blade Runner 2049’,then became one of the best-reviewed sequels of all time. So, we recognize that we have a very high bar to meet with this next installment. Together with Silka and our partners at Amazon, and Scott Free Productions, we hope that we can live up to that standard and delight audiences with the next generation of ‘Blade Runner’.”

The series was written by Shining Girls’ Silka Luisa, who is also the showrunner.

Blade Runner 2099 will star Michelle Yeoh, left, Hunter Schafer, Tom Burke, Maurizio Lombardi, Dimitri Abold, Katelyn Rose Downey, Daniel Rigby, Amy Lennox, Sheila Atim, and Matthew Nedham.

Are you excited for a live-action Blade Runner TV series? Let me know.

And remember, more human than human, that’s our motto.
