Looks like there’s sort of exciting stuff coming in the next few years for fans of the Game of Thrones saga… let’s hope they’re all treated better than the last few seasons of the core show.
Anyway, first up, the Game of Thrones prequel Tales of Dunk and Egg is in early development at HBO; it will be a one-hour series bases on the novella by George RR Martin and will take place almost a century before A Song of Ice and Fire (the book that kicked off the GoT series) and will feature characters Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and a young Aegon V Targaryen (Egg).
So far there are three novellas in the series – The Hedge Knight (1998), The Sworn Sword (2003) and The Mystery Knight (2010) which were then published together as A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (2015).
So far there are no actors, writers or directors attached so far.
On top of this, another prequel series, House of the Dragon, is set to air in 2022 and will explore the Targaryen civil war in Westeros, the Dance of Dragons as the fans will know it, which takes place 300 years before Game of Thrones.
House of the Dragon stars Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower and Emma D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen, “a peerless warrior and a dragon rider who possesses the true blood of the dragon” his character is the young brother of Paddy Considine’s King Viserys.
Recently at GalaxyCon’s virtual Doctor Who Q&A, Smith said of his role: “I think it’ll be a really exciting cast, I think it’s a wonderful legacy to be part of and it’s a great part. And without saying too much, I’m just sort of looking forward to riding a few dragons…if I get to.
“Who knows what goes on in this role, but yeah look – I’m just looking forward to getting started and I think, hopefully, with the people involved, it could be really exciting.”
And now the latest series in development is… an animated show?!
Yes, similar to the Harry Potter series we reported on yesterday, the series will be a spin-off from the core Game of Thrones series, this series is headed to HBO Max.
Of course, until these shows actually get a few episodes filmed and confirmed to be airing, they may not actually happen… remember that Game of Thrones prequel starring Naomi Watts that went to pilot but ultimately never happened? That could happen again.
But it certainly looks like HBO are hoping to put Game of Thrones front and centre of their franchises that have a big universe to explore.
What say you all? Would you be excited for Game of Thrones shows and animated series? Let me know all your thoughts, guys.
