Harry Potter ‘decade long’ live-action series officially announced with JK Rowling exec producing

We reported a couple of weeks back that Warners and HBO MAx were developing a massive Harry Potter live-action series which will retell JK Rowling’s iconic books in a manner even more faithful than the movies but at the time it was a rumour.

Well, today at the Warner Brothers press call the series was confirmed and we even got a little teaser of sorts (below).

HBO Max Head of Originals Sarah Aubrey recently said about Harry Potter: “We’re very much in the business of creating new content for those fans and thinking what to do next” and, while not exactly new, it’s certainly a big undertaking for the newly named MAX streaming service.

The stories from each of Rowling’s Harry Potter books will become a decade-long series produced with the same epic craft, love and care this global franchise is known for.

Warner Bros planning a Harry Potter and the Cursed Child movie with original cast

The series will feature a new cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail, much-loved characters and dramatic locations that Harry Potter fans have loved for over 25 years.

Each season will be authentic to the original books and bring Harry Potter and these incredible adventures to new audiences around the world, while the original, classic and beloved films will remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch globally.

The series will be exec produced by Rowling who is touted to be heavily involved with the series to ensure it’s true to her vision… if only all such endeavours had the creators so heavily involved.

Rowling commented on the series on social media:

I’m a big fan of the books and a fan of the movies but, as is so often the case, a lot of great stuff was missed out of the movies – such as the whole Elf plotline that ran through the later books – and I’d imagine this new ten-year undertaking will do those stories more justice this time out.

And I doubt this is all we will be seeing as we’d imagine this will lead to spinoffs and all sorts of Wizarding World-related stuff being put out too.

Big day for Potter fans, that’s for sure.

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
