We’ve said it many times before and we’ll say it again, Chris Chibnall’s run on Doctor Who has been three years we’d like to forget – and it’s nothing against his Doctor being a woman, we love Jodie Whitaker – it’s because his writing and writing team has been atrocious with not one memorable episode in his three short series but long, long years.
So, it’s with much joy that we report Chibnall doesn’t expect the returning showrunner, Russell T Davies, to continue his Doctor Who lore changes and stories, especially the most controversial, the Timeless Child which changed the character’s entire history and gave us many, many different unknown of Doctors, including actress Jo Martin who, as with Whitaker, both pictured left, was great in the role but sadly, the story made no sense from Martin having a Blue Phone Box TARDIS, to how they explained she, and others, were The Doctor before William Hartnell’s first incarnation of the iconic character… the idea was fine, the casting was fine, the execution was abysmal.
“You’re not carrying a vase across a room,” says Chibnall, “you’ve got to get in there and say what you want about the show, the character and the world.”
“It’s one of the few drama series without a written bible, and every era contains a contradiction or left-turn from what has come before. Any future showrunner will ignore it or run with it… Oh, I fully expect Russell to ignore it!”
Hmmmmm… does he know something we don’t? Is he saying this for a reason? Does he know, perhaps, that Davies plans on ignoring the last three years? Whatever the case, we hope he’s right.
Can we expect, like Russell, to see him perhaps returning to Doctor Who at some stage in the future? “Absolutely never again! Clear red line, final script.”
Assuring us that he never intends to return to Gallifrey or the TARDIS, Chibnall says: “I never thought I’d be offered the job and built into that is why I wanted to keep it to a very specific three-series thing.
“Supervising teenagers’ revision is taking up my time now and there’s lots of other things to write! I will happily sit back and watch. For all that it’s been gorgeous all along, now it’s like, ‘Oh I remember this. This is what real life is like!'”
Nice to see, after all this time, he’s finally doing something good for The Doctor by stepping down.
Am I too harsh? Let me know all your thoughts, gang.
