HBO Max seeking new actor for Constantine role

It looks like not only are we getting a Justice League Dark series on HBO Max but we’re getting a standalone Constantine series. Which, sadly, is likely bad news for Matt Ryan who has played the character since his first appearance in 2014 in the titular TV Series.

We learned that HBO Max and JJ Abrams were developing a Justice League Dark series last April (here) and that it could lead to other series linked to it and now it seems that Constantine will be first out of the gates.

According to a new casting grid leak for the show it will be a completely new John Constantine with neither Ryan nor Keanu Reeves reprising the role with the word being they want a BIPOC – that’s Black, Indigenous, and people of color for those not up on the current vernacular – and Rogue One and Venom’s Riz Ahmed, left, being the type of actor they want for the role.

At the time of the project being announced, CEO WarnerMedia John Stankey said: “WarnerMedia and AT&T are delighted to launch a long-term collaboration with our world-class partners and colleagues JJ Abrams and Katie McGrath.

“We are extremely excited about the potential to deliver remarkable and memorable stories and characters across multiple platforms to audiences around the world. JJ, Katie and all of Bad Robot bring extraordinary vision, exquisite filmmaking, and exemplary industry leadership to this endeavor and our company.”

I honestly think that, with the DC multiverse now being opened up first in The Arrowverse shows and next in The Flash, Matt Ryan was still the perfect man for the job – in fact, we previously wrote an article about why Ryan’s Constantine was potentially the key to the whole DC universe (here) but, it’s a big multiverse out there… plenty of room for a third Hellblazer.

What say you all? Let me know…
